Why you don't train stability on a Bosu ball
Ian van der Werf
01 November 2025You see it all the time in the gym: people balancing on a wobbly platform, focused on keeping their footing. It looks impressive, but does it lead to real stability? At De Werf we believe it doesn't. Because stability is not about artificial instability, but about one thing: the ability to respond adequately when it really matters, physically and mentally.
Stability is not a circus act
Balance is not a trick. And an unstable surface does not automatically make you more stable. Stability is context-bound. It is not about how well you can stand on half a fitness ball, but about how well your body anticipates unexpected turns. Think of a misstep, a sudden twist, or simply a busy day when your head is overflowing.
That is why at De Werf we prefer perturbation training: a method in which we deliberately add disruptions to functional exercises. No show, but stimuli that wake up your nervous system and teach your body to respond with precision and confidence.
The power of water: training with the Aquabag
One of the tools we often use is the Aquabag. A water-filled bag that shifts its centre of gravity with every movement. Lift it up? The water moves unpredictably with you. You have to adjust without thinking.
What does that give you?
- A stronger core, without crunches
- Better coordination and reaction speed
- Preparation for the reality of everyday movement
- Less chance of injury through better self-regulation
In other words: training that does its job, even outside the session.
No gimmicks, just results
Our clients do not come for playful gadgets. They are looking for solidity. Calm. Structure. Whether you are recovering from a burnout or want to stay in top condition despite a packed diary, your body has to do what you need. That is why stability is not a goal in itself for us, but an integral part of the road to lasting vitality.
How we train it in practice:
- Front squats with the Aquabag - dynamic strength for core and legs
- Single-leg deadlifts - asymmetrical control and balance
- Overhead presses - coordination between shoulders and core
- Walking lunges - balance in motion, just like in everyday life
Every exercise is tailored to your context. No standard approach, but bespoke work. With room for progression and respect for your limits.
Want to stand firmer, literally?
Then it is time to say goodbye to isolated balance exercises and choose a programme that makes your body smarter, stronger and more stable. Not with noise or haste, but with attention. For you, your rhythm and your goal.

Frequently asked questions
Balance is your ability to stand still or stay upright. Stability goes further: it is your ability to respond to unexpected movements or disruptions, such as a misstep or a sudden turn.
Not enough. Although it trains your sense of balance, the effect on functional stability is limited. For real stability it is important to train with unexpected and realistic stimuli, such as perturbation training.
Perturbation training is a training method in which you deliberately add disruptions to exercises. This teaches your body to respond quickly, efficiently and in a controlled way to unexpected situations.
The Aquabag contains water that keeps moving, so your body constantly has to adjust. This improves your core stability, coordination and responsiveness without it feeling like a 'trick'.
For anyone who wants to move with more strength and confidence. Whether you are recovering from a burnout, train intensively or simply want to get through your day without hassle - good stability helps you in every context.
Want a body that feels truly stable?
Stability is not about standing still on a wobbly ball, but about teaching your body to handle real disruptions. We train that deliberately, with respect for your context and goals.
